So I’m Accidentally Into French Music

Nothing at all against France. They may like to turn tail and run or simply surrender (see: most every major conflict), but this is also the country that Jean Reno, Luc Besson, croissants, and most importantly, Daft Punk and Air are from. The reason I’m accidentally into their music is because I had no idea that either of them were French groups. OK, Daft Punk is composed of robot dudes and unless you happen to hear about them you probably wouldn’t figure this out, but Air…well, they have French lyrics and stuff so it’s a lot harder to not know this, but in my case I hadn’t had much exposure to them (though Cherry Blossom Girl is still one of my favorite songs). That, and putting foreign languages in your songs has always been considered “hip” so gimme some leeway. [Read more →]

The Wedding

The wedding was nice. That’s really all I can say about it, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I’ve never been to a proper wedding before (as in, one that has a full on reception afterwards and the like), and the only real way to talk about how good one thing was is to compare it to other similar things. So yeah, it was nice.

The ceremony was outdoors at Tahoe, and the reception was indoors nearby. Besides the married couple, I only knew three other people there, and we had our own table to ourselves, which was tucked away in the corner near the open bar. I’m glad for this, as I hate awkward conversations with people I don’t know. Plus, the open bar was pretty nice. [Read more →]

On marriage and live music sucking

Weddings, oh my!

So, I’m going back to Reno tomorrow for five days to hang out with some friends, and also to attend a wedding. But not just any wedding–this is the first wedding I’ll be going to for friends that are about my age, and I foresee two, maybe three more in the next year. I guess you combine the fact that I’m now 25 years old with the whole weddings thing and you get to the quarter century crisis. It’s like these people I know are getting married and having kids, and I sometimes wonder if I’m supposed to be there. Obviously, this is a silly thought, but it’s one that’s come to mind.

I mean, you measure your life in milestones, and the only real way to effectively do this is to compare yourself with other people you know. After all, you all get driver’s licenses, can legally see R-rated movies, smoke, and drink, and go to college and graduate around the same time. Clearly, marriage doesn’t fit into this scheme, but it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that it should–not that I have, but I can understand the reasoning behind it. [Read more →]

New domain, BioShock, and more

Just-A-Lark.com

Not that I blog here often enough to attract many readers right now, but if you are one of the few who stop by you may have noticed the new domain name. 8-Phase.net was an older domain I’d claimed a few years back but it doesn’t really relate to this blog or my personal projects at the moment so I’ve decided to adopt a more sensible domain, and a .com at that. I already own a ton of domains, but this is my first .com for myself, as I’d always preferred .net, but really, .com is where it’s at.

When I first made this blog, I went with a version of the Hemingway Wordpress theme because I liked its sober, simplistic look. But even after the modifications I’ve done to it in the bottom of the page, it’s really quite bland, isn’t it? Plus, the ability to only display two stories at a time was really beginning to bug me. So I’ve decided to scrap the theme entirely and make my own custom one. [Read more →]
